Porridge is by far my favourite breakfast, I'd go as far as to say I have quite an obsession with the stuff. I always come up with different flavours, yummy new topics and love switching it up but I've been having the same porridge quite a lot recently because it's just so warming and comforting.
Oats are high in beta-glucans, a type of soluble fibre that slows down the absorption of carbohydrates into the bloodstream. This slower digestion prevents dramatic spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels that would encourage our bodies to produce and store fats.
Oats are also a nutrition powerhouse - they're high in magnesium which is key for energy production and helps prevent heart attacks, strokes and aids the regulation of blood pressure. There's also a link between magnesium deficiency and depression, making oats a real happy food.
You can also make your porridge in so many different ways, which is why I never get bored of it!
This ultimate warming winter porridge is a dream! I always soak my oats overnight, which not only makes them a lot easier to digest but they cook quicker too. In the morning I cooked my oats with almond milk, cinnamon and a little nutmeg which helps give the oats such a warming and delicious taste that's so Christmassy and comforting. When the oats were cooked I stirred in 2 teaspoons of flaxseed which is high in Omega-3, fibre, protein and B vitamins so it'll really give you an extra boost! I topped my oats with cooked apple and blueberries - they really add so much to this bowl, they make your breakfast seem so much more substantial, sweet and yummy! I also added chopped hazelnut pieces which give a nice crunch to the bowl and give you bonus good fats and protein.
After eating this bowl you'll feel so satisfied, so energised and ready for the day! You'll also feel full until lunchtime thanks to the slow release of energy from the oats and the protein from the flaxseed and nuts. It's a total winner!
