What Happened When I Came Off The Pill?

In June 2018 I wrote a blog post talking about how I was coming off hormonal birth control (you can read that post here). I'd been on the pill for 7 years after a diagnosis of PCOS when I was in my late teens. Although the pill undoubtably helped with my PCOS symptoms at the time (bad skin, irregular periods, etc) I felt like it was doing my more harm than good as time went on, and I hated putting those artificial hormones into my body.

Fast forward to now and I've been pill free for about 8 months! It's been an odd 8 months seeing how my body has adapted, but it's been absolutely incredible and so eye opening. I could never go back to taking the pill again now, looking back I really don't know how I managed for so long. My life has dramatically improved since coming off it....that might sound extreme but it's true.
I wanted to write this blog post to talk about a few things that happened to my body when I stopped talking hormonal birth control.

Improved Digestion & Less Bloating
For years I had suffered with horrendous IBS like symptoms, including poor digestion and painful bloating. The bloating was truly life-effecting - my stomach would swell up like a balloon and the pain was unbearable. I had scans, blood tests and even specialist appointments to try and work out what was causing these issues but everything came back clear. It never crossed my mind that my pill was causing these issues, but since I've stopped taking the pill my bloating has disappeared and my digestion is normal. It feels like a miracle!
I have no idea why the pill did this to my stomach, but my goodness am I glad I got to the root of the problem. Now I don't spend almost every day in agonising pain, I can do my jeans up again and I generally feel lighter. The change has been dramatic and honestly life changing.

Better Mental Health
I've suffered with crippling depression and anxiety since I was 7 or 8 years old. Now, when I was younger this was absolutely down to things like horrific bullying but as I got into my late teens and twenties my depression got worse again for no apparent reason. Sure, depression doesn't need a reason and I definitely have underlying mental health issues but I felt like something else was going on. When I came off the pill I noticed a huge shift in my mental health and clarity of mind! I felt less anxious and mentally lighter almost immediately and I'm happy to say I haven't had a depressive episode since coming off the pill! When I say depressive episode I'm referring to the break downs I used to have on a regular basis - they were unbearable and nothing could be down to help me out of that dark hole. I'd lie on my bedroom floor in mental and physical pain, scream and crying so much the blood vessels around my eyes would burst and I didn't want to go on anymore. Since the pill has gone from my life so have these episodes. Touch wood.

No Dizzy Spells
I used to suffer with dizzy spells most days. Out of nowhere I'd be overcome with dizziness and feel extremely light headed. I always put this down to low blood pressure or lack of food perhaps, but I haven't been having these strange dizzy spells since coming off the pill.

Normal Appetite
One of the biggest symptoms which I knew was definitely related to the pill was my appetite changes and extreme nausea. Every month for the first few days of a new pill strip I'd be woken in the night with this belly-aching hunger and sickness. I would literally have to run downstairs at 3am and grab the biggest bowl of cereal to scoff down before I was sick. It was mental, I've never ever experienced anything like it before. I explained it to my doctor who brushed it off, but I knew it was always when I started taking the pill again after the 7 day break every month.
Since coming off the pill I haven't had this extreme hunger or nausea at all.

Isn't it crazy how one little pill can effect you in such dramatic ways? I can't believe I took the pill for 7 years and was completely oblivious to the impact it was having on my body. If only I'd known sooner....it would have saved me from a lot of pan and a lot of time visiting doctors!
It seems mad to me that as women we're prescribed the pill so easily from as young as 16 years old. We're given these artificial hormones that really do play havoc with our body and we aren't warned out the potential side effects. I wanted to share my experience with the pill to show you another side of birth control. To urge women to be wary and really question what they're taking and what they're putting into their body.

I am not a doctor or a health professional so please do seek medical advice being making any changes!
